A lot number looks like a formality on a label. It is in fact the key that makes every other quality document verifiable. Without it, analytical results float free of the material they describe. This guide covers what a lot represents, why testing at the lot level is different from testing at the product level, and what chain of custody means in practice.
What a lot number represents
A lot, used interchangeably with batch, is a quantity of material produced in a single run under uniform conditions from a defined set of starting materials. The lot number is the identifier assigned to that run. Everything about it, from the raw material records to the analytical release data, is filed under that number.
The reason the boundary matters is that variation happens between runs, not within them. Two lots of the same compound share a name and a specification but are physically different material, produced at different times, potentially from different reagent lots. Uniformity is a claim that can reasonably be made within a lot and not across lots.
Per-lot testing versus per-product testing
Per-product testing means a compound was analyzed once and the result is presented as characteristic of the product. Per-lot testing means each production run is analyzed on its own and released against its own data. The two produce documents that look similar and mean very different things.
The difference is whether the number describes your material. A single historical result cannot detect a synthesis that went differently, a reagent substitution, or a purification that underperformed on a later run, because no later run was measured. Per-lot testing is the only arrangement in which a published purity figure is evidence about the vial you actually received.
Chain of custody
Chain of custody is the documented record of who held the material and what was done to it at each stage: synthesis, purification, lyophilization, fill, sampling for analysis, testing, release, and shipment. Each transfer is recorded against the lot number, so the path from starting material to finished vial can be reconstructed.
Its value is diagnostic. If a result is later questioned, an intact chain of custody makes it possible to identify where in the sequence a problem originated, and to determine which other units share that history. A broken chain, where a step is undocumented or a lot identity is lost, makes that reconstruction impossible.
Using the lot number in practice
For a researcher the workflow is simple. Record the lot number of every compound alongside the experimental data it contributed to. When a result is surprising, the lot number is what allows the material to be checked against its analytical record, and what allows a repeat experiment to be run on either the same lot or a deliberately different one.
